Ground plate installation
Monday, September 5, 2011 at 3:38PM My ham radio buddies will laugh (while, I hope, being secretly jealous) at my project to create a ground plate entry panel for my antenna feed lines. This uses the plate I have mentioned previously, but I am now actually installing it in to the wall.
Today, I managed to finally complete several tasks: I got a new switch in to my band saw so I could cut down the frame in to which I have glued the copper plate, and I then finished cutting the hole (!!!!) in my house.
From inside the house in the corner of the garage that is my ham shack:

and from the outside, under the stairs in the back yard:

It is difficult, cutting a hole in stucco, with a backing of half and inch of plywood. I bought a Milwaukee M12 kit with a Hackzall that I thought would be more generally useful in the future than a full-sized sawsall. The reviews are right: on heavy duty things like my stucco the small 12v batteries discharge in a serious hurry, but it still got the job done.
A bit of rasping and a bit of orbital sanding later and I am now nearly ready to actually affix the plate to the house! Here is the plate in the opening; I have attached it temporarily to the plywood to keep out the racoons while I prepare to finish the installation:

and from the outside:

and, please, don't tell me I shouldn't have put it near the post for the stairs. It was the only stud bay that was wide enough and not under the stairs.
